Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party will contest the December 7 assembly elections in Telangana, a party spokesperson said on Thursday.

SP to contest elections in the state

The chief of the party's Telangana unit, S Simhadri, met SP president Akhilesh Yadav Thursday and urged him to contest elections in the state, party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said.

Simhadri also submitted a list of probable candidates to Yadav, who after considering the party's organisational details gave his nod for contesting the elections, Chaudhary said.

The party will contest elections in other states as well in the future to expand its base, Chaudhary added.

Following the upcoming polls in Telangana, the state is set to witness an intense campaign by the political parties spanning two months. Polling would take place for the 119-member assembly on December 7 in Telangana, according to the schedule announced by the Election Commission on Saturday.

TRS president and caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who has gone for early polls by dissolving the assembly last month ahead of its term, has been targeting the proposed Congress-led alliance comprising TDP, CPI and others, seeking to invoke the Telangana sentiment.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi would not ally with the BJP or support it in the next Lok Sabha election as the regional party was secular and the two parties had "very strong differences of opinion", TRS leader and IT Minister K T Rama Rao said.
