The first half of the clash saw Dragons end on 172 for 8. They received handy contributions from opener Hari Nishanth (41, 5x4, 1x6) and No. 3 R Rohit (46, 3x4, 3x6) at the top before Ashwin (42, 6x4, 1x6) struck meaty blows in the latter half to finish with a flourish. Dragons didn't have the best of starts as lost their opener N Jagadeesan (8, 1x4) in the third over, cleaned up by left-arm spinner Kannan Vignesh (1-20).
R Rohit, a medium-pacer, was sent in as a pinch hitter by Ashwin at No.3 and the move paid off. The second wicket stand between Rohit and Hari fetched 68 runs before Warriors made a comeback. They first had Hari trapped leg-before by medium-pacer L Narayanan (2-35) in the 10th over before Rohit was stumped by Mani Bharathi in the subsequent over to leave Dragons at 100 for 3.
The situation only got tighter for Dragons. Narayanan had Anirudh Sita Ram (8) caught-and-bowled in the 14th over before the Ashwin-led side lost R Vivek (1) and NS Chaturved (6, 1x4) with their team total reading 136 for 6 in the 17th over. However, a quick-fire 29-run partnership from 14 deliveries for the seventh wicket between Ashwin and M Mohammed (12 n.o. 1x6) helped Dragons finish with a flourish.
