Militant Mannan Wani's death a big loss, says Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday termed Ph.D scholar turned militant Mannan Bashir Wani's killing as a big loss.

Mannan was killed in a gunfight with security forces along with his aide

In her twitter page, Mehbooba said the militant's death was a collective loss as the valley is losing young and educated boys everyday.
She said the fact that a Ph.D scholar chose death over life has a strong message that unless a dialogue is started, local youth will continue to die.
She maintained that it was time for all the political parties to think about the severity of the situation and talk to all stakeholders including Pakistan.

Who was Mannan Wani?
  • Wani was a Ph.D scholar of Aligarh Muslim University
  • He was enrolled in AMU after successfully completing Bachelors in Geology and Earth Sciences from the University of Kashmir
  • He later left the course and joined terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, a local rebel group, fighting against indian rule in Kashmir
  • On January 5, his photograph appeared on Facebook and Whatsapp with a description claiming that he had joined Hizbul Mujahideen
  • He hailed from North Kashmir's Lolab area of Kupwara district
  • Wani, 27, was included in Army's hit list

Killed in encounter:

  • Mannan was killed in a gunfight with security forces along with his aide in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Thursday
  • The encounter broke out after the security forces launched a combing operation around 2:30 am in Batgund village of Kupwara district following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants there
  • The gunfight escalated around 11 A.M in which the two militants engaged in the fight were killed
