Karnataka bypolls: JD(S)-Congress wins 4; BJP 1

Bengaluru: Karnataka's ruling coalition Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and Congress won four out of five seats in the election bypolls, while BJP won one seat. Polling was held on Saturday in Bellary (ST), Mandya and Shimoga parliamentary constituencies and Jamkhandi and Ramanagara assembly segments in the southern state.

JD-S candidate and HD Kumaraswamy's wife Anitha Kumaraswamy won from Ramanagara assembly seat. She became the first ever woman MLA to win the seat. While Congress' Anand Siddu Nyamagouda won from Jamkhandi assembly seat. JD-S candidate LR Shivarame Gowda won from Mandya.

Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. in Bellary (reserved), Mandya and Shimoga Lok Sabha seats and Jamkhandi and Ramanagara assembly seats for the polling held on November 3.

Prior to the bypolls, the JD-S held Ramanagara and Mandya seats, while the Congress Jamakhandi and the BJP Bellary and Shimoga.
Around 66 per cent of the 54.5 lakh electorate have voted in the five bypolls.

In all, 31 candidates are in the fray, including five from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), three from Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and two from the Congress. 21 others are Independents or from regional outfits.
