Witnesses describe stabbing incident in Melbourne

Melbourne: Police shot a knife-wielding man after one person was fatally stabbed and two others were injured on Friday in the centre of Australia's second-largest city, police said.

The man emerged from a car which then bursted into flames, bringing central Melbourne to a standstill in the late afternoon rush.


Witness Ella Campbell described the "terrifying" moment she heard a gunshot.

Another witness Tony Nguyen said the car exploded 30 metres away from him.

Officers were confronted by a man "brandishing a knife and threatening them" and at the same time passers-by called out that people were stabbed, Victoria state police said.

Police said investigators were looking for no other assailants.

The man shot in the chest by officers was in critical condition in hospital.
