Pakistan general election 2018: Key players

Hyderabad: As the Pakistan general election is approaching, the politicians in Pakistan are gearing up for their campaigns. Pak polls are coming off on July25.

The government completed its full term on 31 May and then handed over the power to a caretaker government.


This will be the second democratic handover of the government of Pakistan, without any military rule in between.

In the 25th July election more than 100 parties are participating, though there are only three key players.

  • Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz ( PML-N ):
Nawaz Sharif's brother Shehbaz Sharif is currently the president of the party after Nawaz was disqualified from holding elected office or party leadership for life after his name appeared in the Panama Papers.

The ruling party won the general election held in May 2013. Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as the Prime Minister. He held the position till July 2017, after which he was forced to leave the seat because of corruption charges .

Nawaz Shaif was replaced by Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in August 2017. After completing the government's term Abbasi handed over power to an interim government on 31 May and former chief justice Nasir Ul Mulk became the interim prime minister.

PML-N is currently led by Sharif’s younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, former chief minister of Punjab. The party currently holds 55% or 189 seats of the total 342 seats in the National
Assembly.
  • Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP):
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of assassinated Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been serving as the Chairman of the party since December 2007.

The PPP had won the general elections in 2008 after Benazir was assassinated in the middle of the campaign.

The party currently holds 47 seats in the National Assembly and has Left leanings.

  • Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)
The party is led by cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan. PTI is said to be the fastest growing party in Pakistan.

PTI mainly focuses on social welfare and anti-corruption campaigns.

Though the party leader Imran Khan always in news for wrong reasons, like his marriages or for allegations of gay relations, his party is considered the main challenger to PML-N.

The party currently holds 33 seats in the National Assembly.
